Chilly Cheeks Warm Up for Spring!

In about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy. ~Karl Reiland

The Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series #3 included a great race and the human spirit.  One athlete forgot her helmet and she desperately made the search to borrow one from another athlete. She asked me to announce her request over the mic and sure enough a few minutes later another athlete brought up her spare helmet! That’s a WIN-WIN if you ask me!

Racing Underround received well over 300 entries for Saturday’s race and it was a good one! Online registration stayed open until 5pm on Friday the night before and they also took race-day registrations to make sure every athlete had the opportunity to participate in the final race of the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series.

The format for the final race was a 10.8 mile bike, followed by a 4 mile run just like the December event. Tough to shake it up…the the bike course was exactly the same, and the run course follows the same route, but in the opposite direction!

The race was warm and exciting as the cheeks that were once chilly in the 2 previous races warmed up as we head towards spring. Race Results can be found at www.racingunderground.com.

Happy Racing!

Bowling for Saints!

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: About Me!, Non-Profit Fundraisers!

On Saturday afternoon, the Colorado Saint Bernard Resuce hosted its 8th Annual Bowling Tournament, Bowl for the Saints 2011! The Colorado St. Bernard Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the rehoming of unwanted, neglected, abandoned and abused St. Bernards.  Last year, the Colorado Saint Bernard Resuce filled the Holiday Lanes bowling alley with bernard lovers and supporters having a great time while raising money for a great cause. This year, they did it again – filling the entire bowling alley with a happy fundraising crew competing for Prizes!  Participants could place $5 bets on “strikes”, and if they got the strike they bet the would throw, they won a prize!  I’m proud to say I threw five strikes in a row and had the highest bowling score of my life! GO DAWGS!

Other fun events included the silent auction and raffle prizes. Joshua Whitton, last year’s Colorado Saint Benard Rescue Volunteer of the Year award recipient, took home the grand prize of a brand new $100 bowling ball! Way to go, Joshua!

Announcing this event was a great honor! All proceeds will go to help the Saints in rescue.   The dogs thank you!

Chase the Yeti!

Awesome Athletes, the Summit Cove Yeti and me!

A post from Racingnderground.com:

January 23, 2011 – Selling out just 7 weeks after it was announced, the inaugural Yeti Chase lived up to expectations as a fun winter event. The 5K and 10K run, held at Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park, hit its 500 entrant limit more than a week before race day.

Runners were treated to a perfect winter day, with sunshine, clear skies, and no wind as they cruised through the scenic 2,500 acre park on a mix of roads and bike paths. Pro triathlete Jordan Jones, took home the $100 first place prize in the 10K, recording a speedy 34:17 over the hilly course. Heather Utrata took home the women’s cash with her 39:11 winning time.

Paquito Lopez (17:53) and Lori Walker (18:37) took home $100 each for their win’s in the flat and fast 5K event, while all age group winners in both the 5K and 10K received a gift certificate from Runners Roost Lakewood.

The big hit of the day, however, was the Summit Cove Yeti. Participants who had their photo taken with the Yeti are entered into a Facebook drawing for a free 5-night stay in Keystone, courtesy of presenting sponsor Summit Cove, a property management company with 260 properties in lovely Keystone, Colorado.

SkiPix.com captures some high action shots as the athletes chased the Yeti! A big thank you to Roger from SkiPix.com for coming out and clicking away! Check them out online and for your next race!

Cheeks are still chilly in Denver

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: About Me!

The Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series #2 was another fun and unique race! After completing a 1.5 mile run on frozen and icy paths and roadways in the park, athletes mounted their bikes for a single, chilly lap around the 3.6-mile paved loop! Next, they completed a 2.5 mile run, anothe 2 laps on the bike of the 3.6 mile loop. Finally, the crazy athletes (who’s cheeks were now less chilly!) racked their bikes then raced to the finish with a 50 meter dash to the finish line! What a fun race series this is for all to watch and compete! There is is still one race series left on Feb 26th so check it out:

Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Begins!

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: About Me!

Saturday December 4th marked the first of the three Duathlons in the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series.   Athletes competed for points towards an overall first as they move through the three races.  This duathlon included a 4 mile run 10.8 mile bike and 4 mile run.  The athletes kicked off in two waves with the first at 10 am for the men and 10:03 for the women. Stay tuned for race resuls as the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon series continues in 2011. Check it out at http://www.racingunderground.com/chillycheeks/index.html

Sketchers Resistance Runners exhibited as a race sponsor and had shoes for every size giving runners a chance to try on the shoes and take a lap.  These new resistance runners by sketchers have an interesting feel. I had to put down the microphone long enough to put on a pair myself and zipped out a lap! I’d recommend checking them out.  At the end of the race, they gave away a pair of new resistance running shoes to the winner for top female and male!  Mix1 was also exhibiting and gave away full size samples of their new flavours of post race recovery drinks. Thes tasty 2:1 carb to protien beverages were so popular with the athlests that there were none left at the end of the race! Way to go mix one!

Attention Race Directors!

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: Use Your Voice!

Race Directors & Staff:

You guys make the race! The goal of this part of my blog is to share my observations with you as I travel from race to race either as either the Race Announcer or as a participating athlete!

In my experience as both a racer, an announcer and a sponsor, the Announcer you choose as your race day voice can have a huge impact on morale of the racers and Sponsors!  Think of it like this – the person holding the microphone  has command of your ENTIRE audience for the ENTIRE day! Yes, there’s a lot of fun the announcer can have being creative and ad-libbing yet don’t leave it entirely up to the discretion of the announcer to thank sponsors and give instructions. This is YOUR hired VOICE. You are paying good money for this service so maximize it! The Race Day Announcer can be a huge asset and WIN for your race.  Here’s why I think so:

Your athletes need clear and concise  information on race day so they know where to go and what to do. They have so much on their minds as they get prepared to RACE that the last thing they want to do is have to find someone to ask where the bathrooms are. This may seem like basic information, however think about this – you are the race staff and YOU know everything that is going on on race day. But your athletes don’t. Your announcer can be the key to helping your athletes relax and prepare for their race as all the information they need to hear is being announced over the loud speakers. Think about what you want your athletes to know on race day, write it down and then prep your announcer!  Give your race announcer EVERY bit of information on what you want your athletes to know on race day. This may seem like just “one more thing to do” yet I can tell you from experience from both an racer and an announcer, the race directors who take their time to think about what they want their announcers to say on race day have more successful races than the ones who don’t! Remember that repetition is KEY – so ask your announcers to repeat the pertinent information frequently!

When I’m announcing, I get asked all sorts of questions…from where’s the bathroom to where can I find a bandaid to where is the results board to where is lunch being served to where can I find a maker to make a poster for my aunt Sally! People think that the person who has the microphone has all the answers so give your announcers ALL the answers! You and your athletes will be glad you’ve thought about this detail.

Another reason to prep your announcer is your Sponsors. As your Sponsors have generously donated their time and money to be a part of your race, the way you thank them and promote their product and service at your race may be the determining factor in them deciding to continue to sponsor of your races or not!  The better you announcer is prepped with how to thank your Sponsors and promote their product or service, the more they’ll appreciate  being part of your race. Remember that they have a choice in races they chose to sponsor! USE YOUR ANNOUNCER TO THANK YOUR SPONSORS! Think of their tag lines…how to contact them….give aways they’re doing at the race…that kind of thing.  If you’re not sure what to say about a Sponsor, just ask them what they’d like the announcer to say. Trust me, they’ll have a bounty of information to share with you about the befits of their product or service.

Remember that you are a sponsor of your own race too so use your announcer to promote your future races.  Prep your announcer to promote YOUR upcoming races! You have a captive audience! Use your announcer to let athletes know what races are coming up next and why they should sign up for your next race! Again, USE YOUR ANNOUNCER!

This FINISH LINE!: The DID it! They crossed the finish line! This may be someone’s first race or maybe their personal best! Maybe it’s their birthday or they’ve traveled from Canada to participate in your race! Folks LIKE being announced as they cross the finish line. Find out as much as you can about them and have the announcer SAY it as they cross. Have an easy-t0-use system in place so the Announcer can quickly read the information on the athlete as they cross. Even as much as their first name and where they’re from can bring about huge smiles as your athletes cross the finish line.

AND…could you really do a race with out the generous help from your volunteers? Ask your race announcer to thank the volunteers and announce information on how folks can get involved with your origination to volunteer for future events.

The bottom line is this, Race Directors –  as your Announcer, all I”m paid to do is say what you want me to say. Basically, I’m a paid talking head – so, have  helpful, fun and revenue generating information for me to say!

Contact me for tips on your particular race and I’ll be happy to help you brainstorm on ways  prep your announcer and take your race to the next level!

Happy Racing!

My Way or the Tri Way!

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: Live Action Races!

The My Way or the Tri Way was such a FUN Race held at the Aurora Reservoir in Colorado. The athletes could choose the order and disciplines of the triathlon! They could Choose 2 or 3 Disciplines and then select the order they raced! As a triathlete myself, it was a blast to watch the athletes have fun playing with the order of their triathlon.  This race is a great alternative race for those who don’t really like the swim! Come out next year and race your way or the tri way! www.racingunderground.com

American Diabetes Association

Author: sandriasez  //  Category: Non-Profit Fundraisers!

For the past five years, it has been my honor to be the Finish Line Announcer for the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure and Step Out for Diabetes!

The Tour De Cure is a fundraising bike ride held in cities throughout the USA with ride options of 1 mile to 100! The ride in Colorado is held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, Colorado and is a great event to get involved in if you or anyone you know has been affected by diabetes. Chances are with 23 Million Americans  having diabetes, you know someone close to you who has been affected. This year marked the fifth year of the Red Riders Program, an amazing program started by Mari Ruddy of Team WILD and is now a fully implemented nation wide program in 78 states with over 40,000 participating cyclists! Get Involved!

Also this year I announced the Tour de Cure in both Colorado and Minnesota!  The first rider to cross the finish line in Colorado was Scott Bramley, a triathlete from the UK who traveled all the way from the United Kingdom just to ride in the Tour!  The Minnesota Tour de Cure featured four of NBC’s “Biggest Losers”! What a GREAT time! If you’re looking for a motivation to ride your bike and get fit, sign up for the Tour de Cure!

The Step Out for Diabetes is a great fundraising 5K walk featuring the Red Striders walking for a cure.  This year, the very talented DJs from Bass Brigade – DJ JD and DJ Joshua Red joined me at the Step Out Finish Line.  WOW! Those guys are super talented and gave the crowd some fun music to dance to and got everyone energized to “step out”! If you’re looking for DJs for an event you’re doing, I recommend checking out the link on my page.

Anyone can do this event! Come out and walk next year, and I’ll announce YOU as you cross the finish line!
